June in Maryland

In June we went to Maryland to spoil the grandchildren while their parents were out of town. We were only marginally successful at it, but they seemed to enjoy it.

After some swimming earlier in the week, we went to the Maryland Science Center in Baltimore on Sunday. It is, among other things, a very nice hands on museum. Here is Fiona trying her hand at keeping the light lit by pedaling. A little later they are watching the ball being kept in the stream of air (Bernoulli's principle). They also had a traveling exhibit, Rockwell's America. This included more than 100 of his Staurday Evening Post covers. Many of the exhibits were 3-D reconstructions of his illustrations, including this triple self-portrait. Another famous WWII cover was Rosie the Riveter.

One day we met Amelia's nephew, Carl, and his family (with Amelia) at the National Gallery. Here's one of the guys. This sculpture of man and horse is outside the museum. On the way back to catch the underground I got this shot of the Capital Building

Later that day Ian and Fiona had a swim meet. Here's Ian finishing a race and a little later Fiona finishes hers. Then, here's the happy pair after the meet is over, and another of the happy grandparents with them.

We also had a visit from my brother, David, and Bonnie, who were nearby on their marathon trip around the US.
