The Davis-Monthan Air Force Base put on an airshow in March, so Richard and I went up to see it one day. Featured performers were the Blue Angels, but we somehow missed seeing them. We took the shuttle back to the car park thinking we would see them from there, but ....

Well, anyway, we did see some pretty amazing performances. Only a few here. The opening ceremony was by the Army parachute team Golden Knights. Here's a couple of shots of them coming down. One of the more interesting aircraft at the show was this F-117 Nighthawk, which later in the show made 4 or 5 flybys, also including this one. Other aircraft of interest to me included

  • V-22 Osprey tilt rotor aircraft
  • B-57 Canberra
  • P-51 Mustang
  • There were, of course, lots of other aircraft at the show. I missed getting a picture of the "heritage flight", with the P-51 Mustang, an F-15 Eagle, an A-10 Warthog, and an F-4 Phantom II. Quite a sight. Incidentally, D-M is the home base for A-10 Warthog training. Davis-Monthan is also the home of the AMARG (Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group), where old airplanes go to die (or be rebirthed as part of another aircraft, possibly). Very interesting to tour. One can see thousands of retired military aircraft. Just an example, rows and rows of F-4 Phantom IIs, probably several hundred in all. Tour starts from the Pima Air & Space Museum (itself worthy of a long visit, having some 250 aircraft on display).
